4.07 Houston Tethered Swimmers - TE Colt Lyerla

In the real world: Colt Lyerla entered the 2013 season as one of college football's best tight ends, and eight months later, he went not only undrafted, but unsigned for a whole week. The blow-by-blow account (no pun intended) of what happened in between as follows: Lyerla missed the September 14 game against Tennessee. Two weeks later, coach Mark Helfrich suspended him for the game at Colorado for violating team rules. Lyerla left the Oregon Ducks on October 6, was arrested on cocaine possession charges on October 23, and opted out of a drug treatment program in November. Signing with the Green Bay Packers--something that only became possible after he accepted an invitation from that team to participate in their rookie minicamp on a tryout basis--could be a terrific job opportunity, provided the Packers don't re-sign Jermichael Finley (neck surgery). The Pack also drafted Richard Rodgers in Round 3.
In the TUFF world: Houston needs to upgrade at tight end, where potential solutions like Heath Miller and Jared Cook have been neutralized as the result of playing on NFL offenses that don't use them very much. The idea of Lyerla putting up the same crazy stats that a healthy Finley did is definitely enough to warrant using this pick on him. It would be nice to see Lyerla overcome his poor, unstable upbringing and drug problems to become a success story, not just in the NFL, but in life.
